Artist Statement
Nature is most often the immediate source of inspiration for my
works; specific places, particular elements of the landscape,
and processes such as growth, metamorphosis, and re-generation.
I spend a great amount of time immersed in natural environments
and many of my works can be traced back to outdoor excursions.
Natural forms and objects are other sources of intrigue which
contribute to the transformation of my perceptions into artworks.
The impact of a manmade element situated in contrast or harmony
with an organic reference often captures my attention; a fence
line along a cutbank, a wooden stake beside a flower in a garden,
or treasures kept inside of bowls . The role of memory in this
process is nebulous and inextricable. It is usually only in retrospect
that the path from inspiration to creation will show traces of
itself.
Abstraction, whether pure or with some objective reference, has
been the cornerstone of my art making; paintings in particular.
My expression ultimately resides in the process of fusing tactile
material with less tangible inspirations. Working in any media
including painting, drawing, and printmaking makes it possible
to engage in the cycle of regeneration and renewal. The opportunity
to evoke new visual experiences continues to fuel my desire to
paint and make art.
I was born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan and have since lived in
several cities including Saskatoon, Edmonton, LLoydminster, Ottawa,
and Osaka, Japan. I have maintained a studio practice since 1992.
Following the completion of my BFA in 1999, I was awarded the
University of Alberta MFA/MDes scholarship. In 2001, I received
my MFA (painting) from the University of Alberta, where I also
instructed sessionally in the Fine Arts Department. For the past
four years, I've been enjoying studio life in and around Calgary.
Many of my paintings are in private and corporate collections
in Western Canada, the United States and Mexico.
