Biography:
Brent Bukowski studied and performed music, and co-designed furniture
for the award winning,
Chaos Factory, before exploring the visual arts. Upon receiving
an award of merit at the 1997
Kootenay-Boundary Juried Arts Exhibition for his triptych, The
Tyranny of Work, he has had many
exhibitions throughout British Columbia, including a two-year
public gallery tour of the installation,
invasive species. He has lived in the Kaslo area since 1992 where
he and his partner have designed
and constructed their house and gardens and care for their two
children.
He is currently the Curator of the Langham Cultural Centre, Kaslo,
BC.
Current Touring Exhibition
2006 Fragile Nature, Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery, Waterloo,
Ontario January 15 to April 2, 2006
Artist Statement:
Brent Bukowski works with found objects--- primarily metal and
glass. His compositions are inspired by the observation of global
patterns from the perspective of a simple and secluded lifestyle
in the mountains of British Columbia. His assemblages achieve
a high level of detail, in which broken and cut glass are meticulously
layered in and around metalwork. Since 2000, he has created three
bodies of work: Invasive Species (2000-01), an installation in
metal, glass, wood and seed that illustrates the mass extinction
of species and the evolution of our natural environments. With
a running length of up to 160 feet, this multi-layered relief
snaked its way around the walls of a given space--- suggesting
the imagery of global movement and the mingling of eco-systems.
Circle(s), Straight Line(s) and Intersection(s) (2002- ), an on-going
experimental series resulting in an array of independent works
relating to the cause and effect of current events and trends.
A Piece of the Pie (2005- ), a series of 20 sculptures in found
metal and glass that examines the expansion of world consumption
in a form that employs opposing pie charts in which current statistics
pertaining to specific social, economic and environmental indicators
are compared to those of up to 50 years ago.
